Another Interview from “Head in the Cloud 2026”
Here is another little interview from mittwald’s “Head in the Cloud”. I was asked what makes an event more than just a conference. My answer is that there’s no real secret beyond openness: being willing to be vulnerable, admitting mistakes and not making everything feel over-planned. A host can (and should) invite people and welcome them, but the cozy atmosphere comes from the people who are there and spreads among them.
The video is in German, but here are both transcripts. German and an English translation.
Also das ist dann was, was sich dann spreadet, quasi verteilt.
Question: What makes an event more than a conference?
Marc Thiele: Yeah, good that you ask, because I just asked myself that question on stage. People actually ask fairly often what the secret is. But I don’t think there is one.
I think the openness with which you can and should run something like this is kind of the secret. Saying: here I am, I’m vulnerable, I’m doing this, I make mistakes, and so on. And showing that not everything is planned out or tightly scheduled. That’s kind of the secret, I think, that wins people over right away and tells them: you can feel safe here, you can sit down, relax, you’ll have a good time while you’re here.
And then the things happen that make it so cozy. I don’t think one person can really control that. I can invite it, I can be the host and welcome people. But whether it happens is up to the people who are there, I think. It’s something that spreads, that gets passed around.
